Assignement 4: Conclusions

The very first assignment we were given was a learning inventory self assessment quiz. For our final project we are to do the quiz over again and see how our results have changed.

Old vs New results: 1 most important, 9 least important.
OLD New
Critical thinking 1 2
Problem solving 2 4
Resource management- internal 3 8
Goal setting 4 7
Motivation 5 6
Metacognition 6 3
Resource management-external 7 9
Note taking 8 1
Attention and memory 9 5

My new list is completely different then my first list. I came into this class thinking that I perfected my learning strategies already. But by the end of this course, i came to realize that sometimes old methods are not always right.
Things i thought i didn't need work on, actually were hurting me, like note-taking. I thought i took great notes, but really was just copying word for word what the teacher had said and not really listening. Now i can take brief notes and go come and make longer more elaborate ones if i feel it necessary.
I have completely understood the importance of an appropriate study and homework area.
My motivation and goal setting has improve greatly after seeing my stress decrease when i plan and study properly.
I learned ALOT about my learning strategies and i feel that i have improved on alot and i will now carry my new habits into next semester!

Teaching to Learn

For this optional project we were to prepare a power point presentation and present it to someone. Since i do not know how to do power point very well, and my cousin needed help with his grade 9 math I decided to just help him out last night.
He actually called me about a week ago saying he was not doing well in his math class and needed me to help him so he can pass his midterm.

Preparation
I picked up his text book and the notes he had taken in class and took them home with me on Friday. Friday night and Saturday afternoon i looked over his notes and had to reteach my self so of the things I have forgotten since I was in high school. I made my own notes and wrote down some good examples and practice questions from inside the text book.

Teaching
I understand that everyone learns differently. Some people learn visually( by seeing demonstrations, diagrams...ect) and others can just listen to the explanation and understand. Dalenos teacher was teaching the class as more of an audit thing, so I decided to try a different method to see if he could grasp it a little better. I tutored him for about 2hours on Sunday night after my family dinner.

Outcome and Thoughts
Daleno is a visual learner as i suspected, so the one on one time he got with a "teacher" helped him get the extra explanations that he required. By the end of the session he felt more confident and we have worked out a schedule where i can help him at least once a week.
This optional project helped me take a broader look at different ways of learning. I already use different methods in different classes, my methods for math and my methods for English are totally different, but i now get the concept that if i am truly not understanding a class or a topic, i just need to look at it with a different view and try another method.

Test Taking

For an optional project were were assigned to read chapter 11, Test Taking, and asses our normal test taking strategies, evaluate them and then try some of the method and tips from inside the chapter.

Usual Methods
When ever i would have a test i would usually start studying 2 days before the test. I would sit down in my living room with my family while they watches TV and i would look over my notes. I am a memorizor, so i would just read the notes over and over again until I could recall them with out having to look at the text book.

Evaluation
I have always done fairly well on tests. But i find my stress levels are very high, due to going into test not knowing the material and understanding it, but just memorization. My confident would be very low. I decided to try a couple of new methods i got from the text book.

What I did
I decided i would try my new methods on my Biology test on December 7. I went home after each class and looked at my notes, which i learned to do from another assignment. I made my own notes, and wrote out potential questions that could be on a test from what we learned that day. I started studying on the Sunday ( my test was the following Friday). I would go home and relax for a bit so my mind had time to be calm and prepare to be in study mode, i would then go into my room and shut the door. I never once had the TV on but sometimes i would have very low music in the background. I would study for 30 Min's and then take a 10 min break, so my brain didn't over load. I used the questions i had made from my notes and answered them.

My Results
I felt less stressed because i was more confident. I knew the material because i took the time to teach my self the processes instead of just trying to memorize them.
I feel i did very well on my test.
For the future i know now the i am not unable to teach my self thing, i just need to take the appropriate amount of time and effort. I will also study in rooms where my attention will not be attracted somewhere else.

Dental Office Interview

Who:
The person I chose to interview was my mom. She is a medical secretary at a dental office. The profession I would like to get into is dental hygiene, so I thought since she is in the office everyday she would be a great interviewee.

Summary of my interview:
-The most important vocational skills-
"I deal with alot of people everyday. of every race, age and religion... everyone needs their teeth cleaned! So you have to be friendly and understanding to different peoples different needs. When people come in they are sometimes scared and anxious so you will have to be clam and confident in order to sooth them. You have to be a real people person!"

-The importance of generic skills such as written communication, interpersonal communication, math, use of computers, and problem solving and decision-making.-
"Listening inattentively is a MUST for this job. You have to be able to listen to the dentist and understand exactly what he wants you to do. People skills are important. learning to following instructions exactly the way they are given.

-The things you should do outside of college to increase your chances of getting hired after you graduate-
"Volunteer work is a great asset to have when applying to any job really. But mostly if you want to get into a dental office, volunteer with young kids and older people. As well as you can try and get into a dental office and watch for a day to get to know the doctors and other hygienists."

My Thoughts
After interviewing my mom, I had a greater understanding of how the office is run. She gave me great ideas on how to succeed in getting a job at an office. This summer i now plan on volunteering in a nursing home to get experience with older people. I also spent the morning with her at her office today and got at look at what i will be doing as a career!

Time Managment Option

I decided to do this project the week ending November 24, 2007.

Preparation and Follow Through:
For this project I took an agenda and made a daily list of to-do's. I wrote down my school schedule, work schedule, personal and social times and homework and assignments i need to get done. I color coded the tasks so i could take a visual look at which aspect of my life was dominating or lacking. As the week went on I updated my agenda according to my actions. I added times of how long I studied.

My Conclusion:
After my week was done because I colour coded I could visually see that work was dominating my schedule. It is what took up most of my time. Next after that was in class time and personal time. The least amount of time spend on was for studying and homework.
I noticed that when i first made my schedule on the Sunday I added alot of homework and studying times, but as those times came up I usually erased the time slot and added personal or social time.
I liked doing this project because it made me take a visual look at my schedule as a student. After looking back on the schedule I had made and then the one that i adjusted i could see my priorities need to change if i want to succeed in my school work!

Multiple Learning Stratigies

For this optional project i had to pick a class and try a new learning strategy.

What and Why?
I decided to try this method in Biology while learning the process of cell division, MITOSIS!
I chose to do it on Mitosis because it is a long process that has many steps, and i knew that it would take some time to memorize/understand the whole process.

What I did:
1) In our first class we learned about the first step of Mitosis, which is Interphase. i took notes throughout class and looked at the diagram in our text book.
2) During our break i took the time to highlight any important sections he mentioned and then i underline anything i was a little confused about.
3) When i got home that night, after dinner, i took out my notes and put then into my own words. Doing t his i was able to learn it better because i was teaching my self. When i teach myself i have to be in a quite place and be alone because i talk to myself and coach my self through the tutorial.
4) After i felt that i was able to go through all of interphase without the help of my notes, i then quizzed my self with some questions i have written done earlier when i underline in class. if i could answer the questions without having to refer back to my book, i knew i was on the right track!

The next Biology class i had we learned the other steps of Mitosis and i repeated the same steps as i did for Interphase.

My outcome
I believe that this helped me ALOT! because there are 8 steps involved in cell division, it takes the brain along time to soak in all of the information. And by lengthen out my studying time it helped my not only memorize the steps but learn them as well!
On my test i wrote i received an A and i was able to recall all of the information that i learned with this new strategy!

This is a very useful strategy to use when i am trying to learn a lengthy process and i found all the work that i out into this strategy paid off in the end!

Recommendation Letter

Dear Future Students:

Strategies for success is an optional course but as my schedule turned out to be full, it was the only option I had. I came into the class unexcited and close minded. I thought "I have been in school since I was 5 years old, I know what my learning techniques are so I do not need to take a course like this one..." But to my surprise this course actually had a big payoff for me.
I have learned many new strategies that i will take with me throughout the rest of my college years!
I have always gotten good grades so i assumed the techniques i was using must be the best, but as to my surprise they were actually bad habits. This class showed me that iIam a person that memorize everything, I didn't usually care if I knew what I was reading all that mattered to me what that i could memorize it word for word. After reading a few chapters and doing a few "new technique" assignments Tim gave us I saw that i felt less stressed and more confident when i took the time to learn what i was reading rather then just memorizing it.
My favorite lesson i will definitely take with me all through school is the Multiple learning strategy assignment we did. I had to take notes and then review them daily. I found it helped my ALOT when it came to learning long processes!
I feel less stressed when it comes to school. I lengthen out my studying times, rather then cramming and I am doing very well in school!
I defiantly believe that this course should not only be an optional course but a mandatory one!

Stress Managment

We had a stress management workshop on Nov.5,2007 at St.Clair College. It was hosted my Tim Field, my strategies teacher. The first half was teaching us about stress, why it happens, what are the causes, what are the effects....
We filled out sheets about us to determine our stress levels. After filling out my sheet i found that most of my stresses are coming from my job and school. With being back in school and making less money because of it i feel very stressed. I scored a 340 on the stress test, which we learned puts me in the range of 80% likely to become ill.
After we learned what makes us stressed and the consequences of it, we went up to the board room and learned how to control stress and relax.
Once in the board room, we had to remove any distractions (ie, coats, books, wallets...) and sit back and relax. We listened to "The Joy of Stress, Power Nap" and totally RELAXED! It was very nice to sit back and feel your body unwind and destress!
After the workshop i realized i will have to learn to spot myself getting stress and stop it ASAP, before i die of heart problems,.. haha.

Study Group #3

On Nov. 1st we did our group meeting in room C in the library. We all met at 2pm and left at 3:30pm.
Thursday morning we all had a review biology class to prepare us for our test on Friday. In our study group today we went over the rest of cellular respiration and started on mitosis.
I liked using the room because there was a board in there that we could write on and it really helped when we were trying to explain things to the other members.
I received alot of help on mitosis from the other group members.
Our biology test is tomorrow.

Study Group #2

On October 29th we did our second group study today in the library today at 10:15am to 11:15am. We looked over glycolysis for our up coming Biology test. I started studying about a week ago so i knew my glycolysis cylce down pat. So i mostly explained things to the others and helped them with any questiosn they had on it.
Our biology test is on Friday, October 2.
On our next group meeting we will review the next 2 stages in cellular respiration and start on chapter 8, Mitosis.

Mid-Term Progress Report

My Progress:
I graduated highschool in 2005, so being out of school for 2 years i thought that i would have a hard time getting back into the roll of things. I was a good student in highschool but I was a little put off by college because it was totally different then highschool. But as it turns out I am actually doing very well for myself. This semester I have bio., chem., english, math, computers, and strategies. On all of my labs, assignments and test i have received at least 80%. I have also handed everything in on time. I have used a mix of my old learning habits with a little of the new habits I have learned in Strategies class.

My self as a Learner:
I realized that I can be a very hard worker when I put my mind to something. It also helps if I have an interest in the class I am taking. I plan on going into Dental Hygiene, which is a hard class to get into, so I find the motivation I have to do excellent in Pre-Health pushes me towards being the best student I can be. Not to say that I do not need improvement in some areas or that I don't slack off sometimes. I learned that sometimes change can be OK. Like I have changed my learning habits a little bit, after reading my strategies text book.

Next Semester:
Next semester I will keep my motivation. It is what pushes me to do my best. Taking strategies has really helped me visually see my self as a learner. By all the readings and self assessments we have done i was able to see what areas i needed to improve on. Through every chapter I read I find really good tips on how to improve my learning techniques. I plan on keeping the new techniques I have learned.

Assignment 3: Conitive and Metacognitive

PART 1
After reading chapter 7: "Improving your Cognition and Metacognition", I found some great ideas that will help me become a better learner.
First I had to look up the definition of metacognition (The awareness and control of your own learning.) Then I took notes and found things that I plan to use this year in school.

My learning methods are usually the low-level strategies. I rehearse everything, but as i read i found that it is the least effective method. So I must learn the high-level strategies.
So here are some things that i would like to work on;

  • Paraphrasing- It is part elaborating. I usually learn word for word what the teacher says, but i should start going home and putting it in my own words, in a way that i can understand.
  • Outlines- This is from organization. Instead of scribbling down everything the teacher says all in one paragraph, i think it would be helpful to add headings and subheadings to help me find information faster when i need it.
  • Concept maps- Also from organization, it will help me visually see connections between subjects, rather then having to read to find connections.
  • I really need to work on my metacognition, planning, monitoring and modifying. I need to start using a planner to write my due dates down and looking at those due dates mark dates and times that i should set aside to work on that material. I really like the attention tracking idea of putting a check mark down every time i feel my attention drifting away.

I do understand that each course requires different learning strategies, what will work in one class may not work in another. For example for math i have to do and redo the questions over and over again, whereas biology i have to rehearse the information. So this chapter helped me broaden my learning techniques.

PART 2

In part 2 we had to complete a survey. After doing the survey I really realized that my main learning technique so far has been memorizing. I will memorize everything! A question in the survey asked me if i would memorize something even if i didn't understand it, and i answered that frequently I do. I realize this is bad because memorization generally only helps me with multiple choice not so much with essays when i have to elaborate in my own words and add my own insight. I should be more prepared for class with questions i have from reading the chapters before they were taught. I should go home and make my own notes, that way it is stopping me from just memorizing what the teacher or the text book say. Now when I summarize and paraphrase I am elaborating and making my own insights.

I also found that I don't generally put any interest in my courses. If i find that they are boring i will try and do as little work as possible. I need to start becoming more interesting in my topics because if I am trying to study something i have no interest in it will be hard for me to keep my attention on it.

Before i took this survey i thought that i generally put alot of effort into my schooling, but after answering that i do not do this to question #18- I make a point of looking at most of the suggested readings that go with the lectures, i realized that i could put more of an effort in trying to be prepared for class.

Part 3

In part 3 we had to read a story.

I feel that this story did speak to me. Even though he had no idea what he was doing he knew that he had to do it. Quitting wasn't an option for him. Because he had an interest in something, it motivated him to want to learn about it. He had a goal and used motivation to reach it. When he accomplished his goal he he felt extreme pride.

Characteristics of a self directed learner:

It spoke to me because like in part 2 i was saying that i didn't have interest in my courses so it was hard for me to keep attention on them, because he had such a strong interest it motivated him to keep going. I believe if he didn't have an interest he would have given up and just bought a boat. It goes to show that if you have a goal you can do anything that seems impossible as long as you have motivation powered by interest.

Self Directed versus Academic learner:

In school i am definitely a academic learner, i will learn something because i have to. I very little have interest in anything i am learning so i try and put little effort into it. I will just try and memorize it just to get through it. I feel it will be important for me to try and learn to be self-directed because it will teach me to motivate my self even when i am doubting. If i set goals and follow them then i will eliminate alot of my unnecessary stress.

Weimers comment: "College should be the time when and the place where students develop prowess as learners"

First i had to define prowess (a superior skill that you can learn by study and practice and observation).

I agree that different people learn at different rates and in different ways. As a college teachers should be more accepting to that. Some people are visual learners while others just need to hear it once. The college should adapt to both those needs and learn to not only talk during lectures, but hand out notes and make notes on the board.

Our first report and what I learned from it.

For our first assignment in Strategies class, we had to read chapter 1 of "Learning to Learn" and take a self assessment quiz. Then we had to write a short report summarizing what we learned from the chapter and how it relates to our own learning strategies.

How I completed my original report:

After doing the self assessment quiz I could visually see which sections I needed to concentrate on and which I was doing well on my own with. I read about each of the sections in the text book to gain a better understanding of each topic, so that I could rank them in order from what I needed to work on most to what I was doing well with. I wrote my paper summarizing what i learned in the text book and explained which areas in needed to work on and why.

Self assessment:

After receiving my report back and getting a few tips from Tim I realized ways to improve my paper, so i choose the option of rewriting my report. I believe the information in my report helped explain more about me and my learning techniques to my teacher, Tim Field, because I explained my weaknesses and strengths to him in each of the different topics. But i realized that it was not in the appropriate layout. I smooched all my information of the topics in one paragraph. For my original report i would have given my self a 7 out of 10, because the info is good just the layout is hard to understand and read.

My New Approach:

To rewrite my report I am going to keep the information I have in my original paper, I am just going to change the layout so it will be easier to the find information. I will achieve a new layout by adding bolded head titles, more spacing and numbering my points.

What I Learned:

We were given this project with very few guidelines to follow. And I now see it was because Tim wanted us to hand in a report that met our standards of writing and layouts. He then gave the reports back and taught a class of appropriate layouts and what is accepted. We received our papers back and we had a chance to see how our own writing styles compared to what was appropriate. It made me take a second look at how I write. It definitely showed me what areas I need to work on when doing a paper. I think that was an extremely smart way of visually showing the class their writing techniques compared to what an accepted perfect paper should be.

1St Day

I'm here in stratigies class. School has been good so far. Already had a math test, an essay due and a Chemistry lab. Life is good. Met some new amies, Dani and Jess.
We created Blogs in my Stratigies for Sucess class, so we can keep track of our progress as a better learner. We will do posts about projects we did or just things we learned in general.
